Between a Pond and the Ocean

Everyone finishes high school having made countless friendships over the course of their 13 years of schooling.

Some of these we keep close to us and continue to swim beside, while others turn down a different path, as we push on through to the ocean.

Along this journey, we come across people who are just like us, trying to find their place in the ocean, but still find themselves lurking around in the pond.

While some easily transition from the pond to the ocean, others find it much more difficult to do so.

Let’s be honest, the Freshers are a breed on their own, no one other than the Freshers actually likes us anyway!

This, in a nutshell, is the life of a Fresher at SEM, some people come with friends, making the transition easier, but others do not, where they struggle to break off from the pond.

I was definitely the latter, yet this situation became vastly different within a few weeks, where I met and got to know people very quickly.

At the beginning of the year, all of the Freshers were in the same boat, trying to make their way to the ocean, and some adapted to this quicker than others.

Overtime, the Freshers became used to the environment they were thrown into, readily making friends with their fellow Freshers.

At this point in time, an outsider wouldn’t be able to distinguish a Fresher from any other boarder, but until the end of the year, we will be known by all those who board at SEM as the ‘Freshers’.

As we prepare to swim out of the Fresher zone and into the second year life, we have come to appreciate the lessons we have learnt along the way through the friends we have made.

I’m sure many Freshers would agree that the friendships we have built this year are as strong as a pyramid, which is not falling down anytime soon.

In around two weeks’ time, the Fresher zone of 2016 will be done and dusted, where we will be ready to take on the ocean when the tide comes in next year.
